Monkey Puzzle

Realizing my unique wood relief paintings have a puzzle-like quality, I decided to create a wood relief puzzle as a multiple work of art. The 21-piece puzzle, (titled, simply, Monkey Puzzle), based on one of my paintings, is an interactive piece of art for the whole family. Challenging for younger children, parents can work with them to put it together. When not being played with, it fits together in its frame and sits in the custom made stand, that comes with it, as a charming piece of art for a child's room, or any room in the house.

Each puzzle is hand-painted by me using VOC-free totally non-toxic paint (yes, it can go harmlessly in a mouth), and handcrafted by a master Vermont craftsman using sustainably grown wood.

The slogan that describes this work best is, “Art you can play with!”

PAINTINGS ON PAPER AND PANELS - 2011-2013

After producing a large series of labor intensive wood relief paintings I began a series of paintings, in 2011, consisting of oil on gesso paper. This gave me the ability to work faster and to experiment more freely than I could do using wood. Working on paper allows for more free-wheeling shapes and openess in the design of the work.

I began making the paper pieces by using a technique similar to what I had developed with the wood relief painting, using a collage technique for making elements and gluing them together with the larger shapes. However, as the series of paper paintings has progressed, various other techniques, including just painting directly on the paper, have started to present themselves. At the same time, I've also made some pieces painting directly on wood panels without relief or collage.

The subject matter in these new works still reflects my interest in the nostalgia for childhood, which seen from a distance retains its innocence, juxtaposed with the complexities and excitement of our contemporary life. I'm conveying the conflicted feelings we experience by longing for the simpler past with our desire to be up to date in the fast moving and complicated present. As things change, and we change, what used to be takes on a almost dream-like quality, as memory is selective and never exactly true.

GRAPHITE DRAWINGS ON PAPER 2011-12

Drawing is a large part of my process. I draw, cut up the drawings and collage the pieces, use that as a basis for another drawing, and do the same thing again and again. I keep going, changing the drawing in many ways until it starts to look like something I might want to keep, as the basis for a painting, as a painted work on paper, or to just keep as a drawing.

If I used it as the basis for a painting, or for a painted work on paper, the image will usually change again as I'm painting. It might change a lot as I go along, or the changes can be subtle. After I finish the final piece, I find that I sometimes like to go back and make a new drawing that is based on the changes made in the newest version. So, I can make drawings before, or after, a work is completed.

For me, drawing is the visual equivalent of thinking.

RELIEF PAINTINGS - 2008-2011

Like the early Surrealists, I have been using images of toys to create an emotional impact. My wood relief paintings, feature bright colors and lively shapes and employ a labor intensive and intricate wood relief technique. After cutting the wood shapes, each piece is painted separately with oil paint, and then screwed onto a painted wood panel from behind.

This imagery and way of working allows me to comment on the tumultuous state of our contemporary life. The vintage toys refer to the fact that childhood, and, by implication, adult life as well, isn't what it used to be. The days of growing up slowly have been supplanted by an overly busy lifestyle, more bombarded with input than ever before.

On the other hand, the complications, juxtapositions and multi-tasking we all experience, can be fun and interesting. Though challenging, our modern lives reflect a new, exciting cultural expansion. The colorful oil on wood relief and animated quality of these paintings captures the upbeat side of our new order.

In this way the paintings depict both the positive and negative sides of this aspect of contemporary life and expresses the contradictory state of our existence.
